| Chennai at twilight from outside my terrace |
When Susan Deborah started the Chennai
Blogger’s tablog “What Chennai means to me” and I joined in, I had no clue I
would be writing a farewell post to Chennai today. In fact, just few months back I had
written my first anniversary post in this city: Aah Chennai! But so it is, so
it is.
The blog baton was passed to me by Shantaram. You will enjoy his "Know my city better" kind-of post. Click here and read -:)
In this post, I recall what this city meant
to me in terms of people, experiences and moments.

When I moved into Chennai in May 2011,
direct from United States, I could not have forecast that I would discover this
city in such an unconventional way. No, I did not visit Mylapore Kapaaleshwar
Temple or go to the famous churches or streets or museums in the city. But I remember picketing
in strange street corners as part of the India Against Corruption group within a month of my arrival to this new city. I
remember climbing up a cement circle in a major Chennai street intersection and holding
an anti-corruption placard. I remember telling protesters to stay calm as
cops moved into to arrest us for the June 8th fast at a youth hostel
venue. I remember going on bike campaigns with complete strangers to villages
outside Chennai and watching them perform street plays. I remember getting
arrested, entering the police van and rapidly messaging our communications team
of the story unfolding inside the van while a Times Now journalist was shooting
some questions. And I remember the Kalyana Mandapa where we were held--my way of discovering Chennai wedding halls, media, and making community-:).

You may have visited Marina Beach but I discovered the sands on the night of Aug 20, 2011, when close to 10,000 strong crowd descended with a candle. Touched I wrote a post that night: "The Night when Chennai emerged". I can assure
you I never thought I would discover any city in this way.
And in those few months I found myself weirdly featured in a CNN-IBN documentary "Anna Hazare's army"
(click here, interview from 19th min) and in an India Today article "The Other Annas" (click here) as part of the Chennai arm of the the movement. Suddenly I was nationally a Chennaite, hesitant inside, but nevertheless one.

Nor did I forecast who my friends would be
in this new city. Young men and women in colleges, in early years of corporate life,
and some middle aged and senior men and women—almost all with a social bent in
their heart. Even if I had tried, I couldn’t have discovered them by myself—but
the city thrust its best before me like fashion models walking the ramp. I saw folks volunteering with gusto—giving their
time, energy and money. If it was not for India Against Corruption, then it was
for Kodambakkam 2020 (a plan to rejuvenate a locality in Chennai by the year
2020) via Nallor Vattam or it was for cleaning up 13 kms of Chennai Coastal lines via
Chennai Trekking Club or else it was for the 11 children’s homes via SevaiKarangal. Chennai, to me, will always be first and foremost, the city of
volunteers.

And then I found friends amongst trekkers
and runners and cyclists. I can assure my readers I am not exactly an athletic
person. But I found community and acceptance in this group-Chennai Trekking Club. My age did not matter. My accent did not matter. My views did not
threaten. Folks in this group included me in a way that changed my perspective
on things—I began to love being in the mountains, mountain streams and lakes
and cooking on firewood a food that seemed unearthly tasty! Some of
the trips were special and resulted in blogposts—like the overnight trek to Kaurav
Kunda (Human Landscape), the crazy uphill motorcycle trip at Nagari (Doing Sehwag in Nagari), the lovely trek with Auroville kids (The Auroville Girls) or
mid-sea diving near Kovalam (The Day We Went Mid-Sea). The trips stimulated
my brain and egged on my writing.

And more unearthly even, is how I launched
on a Bharat discovery mission from this city. A lovely Gandhian lady in
Sewagram whose father had served as Vinobha Bhave’s secretary told me how
Gandhi spent his first few years travelling and learning about India first
hand. I felt I needed to follow suit. The city provided me with the right
networks and support and understanding of rural development issues through the
program I worked for-Gramothan India. In the strangest of ways I had access to
the best reading materials on rural issues, and meetings with those who had
dedicated their lives to village upliftment, and encouragement to know more. In
that sense, Chennai has been magical.

Lest you wonder if I ever saw Chennai’s
architectural splendour—ahem I did, but again in a very different way. I joined
a group of photographers celebrating Madras Day and thanks to them, I was able
to see and photograph some of the sights. Here are some of my clicks from that
trip.
Finally, the city has not been all goey and
happy. I have had my moments of pain and utter grief. I have also lost friends
and been disliked intensely. I have suffered loneliness for being me. I have
lost loved ones. And perhaps most significantly, I have lost a dream. In that
sense, I entered the city as a slightly anxious but wide-eyed idealist and I
leave the city as an existentialist.
It is time for me to move to another city
and Hyderabad it is for now. Adios Chennai or as my Spanish teacher taught me—Hasta
Luego (See you later)!
I pass the baton back to the Susan Deborah who
started the Tablog with this post, thus completing this circle. 30+ bloggers
participated in this exercise. A google search on “What Chennai means to me”
will yield you other posts. If you are a Chennai blogger and wish to join the

Thank you Magiceye! It should be fun...
DeleteWow, Bhavana. You've got - and given back - more to Chennai in a year than most people have in a lifetime. More power to you and may you get the best of life wherever you are.
ReplyDeleteI was lucky, Shantaram. Somehow I was thrust into the right place at the right time.
DeleteAbsolutely brilliant post! A fitting finale! :)
ReplyDeleteYes, quite strangely a fitting finale...thanks for your presence here..
DeleteWhat a fitting close to the CBC tablog. I'm glad you joined us and also the Tablog. This post was wholesome in a way that it featured many things that most of the posts did not - As Shantaram rightly mentions, "You've got - and given back - more to Chennai . . ." All said and done, I feel sad that I couldn't meet you while you were here but we will definitely meet one day - I don't know where and how, but yes, we will!
ReplyDeleteTake good care of yourself and much love.
Joy always,
Susan
Oh Susan, we will definately meet. I will be visiting Chennai once a month and Goa is on my to-go list:)

DeleteWe are in Chennai, but never even knew about all these groups. Good to know that you were associated with the IAC movement. I guess we don't have the social or adventurous side that you have. This is the first tablog post that made me want to learn more about the city and its people. For that inspiration, 3 cheers to you :)
ReplyDeleteDestination Infinity
Thank you, D.I.! I am glad I inspired you to seek the city in a new way. I was lucky to be at the right place and right time--just plain lucky. Chennai is a magical city!
DeleteReading you post, It is difficult imagining that yo were there for one year only. What a tangible connection you developed with the ciy.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your rendezvous with Hyderabad.
Yes, it has been an intense year and half, Meenakshi. Lot of grace my way in this magical city...

DeleteYour journey in Chennai was awesome! But I bet it would be more awesome in Hyderabad! :D Welcome to Hyderabad. The land of nizams and pearls! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you, Satish!!! I look forward!
DeleteAs always, your post holds not only a zealous passion for everything that you believe in and hold dear, but also a warmth and sincerity that is very rare. I have been following your blog for a while now, ever since the Voices for Damini initiative. The depth and empathy that your display for the causes that you support infuses a refreshing pep to my resolutions as well.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I'm Tamil and have roots in Chennai, but have never lived there (in a way, I'm your opposite!). To see this town through your eyes has been a unique experience for me.
Thank you Mixi! Your words reassure me. Sometimes I write with such vulnerability that makes some readers uncomfortable. Thanks for witnessing!
DeleteGlad to be able to showcase Chennai in a different way. I have been lucky to do that!
Amazing post, Bhavana! And here's to new beginnings for you! I will come back and read through all the links provided. There is a wealth of information here.
ReplyDeleteThank you Rachna! Hope to see you in the Nizam's city!
DeleteBhavana,
ReplyDeleteThese fond memories will keep you smiling for years to come. Time comes when we have to move out of a place which becomes most loved but we have to move on as our activities demand that. I will read the links tomorrow.
Take care
So true! Memories is all that we carry and some dreams...
DeleteGood to see someone who has explored Chennai's other face in a very short time. Hats off. Wishing you more on your exploring India.

DeleteBhavana, I literally felt embarrassed reading this post of yours about the city I call home! What an experience you have had in my hometown which I never cared(??!!) to explore! What a way to see the beaches! You experience one day at a time where as we live one day at a time!
ReplyDeleteRamya
Yes, I have been lucky to experience the city in this way, Ramya! It has been a magical experience...but luck and grace was the criteria, not me...
DeleteHEy! Well written and lovely snaps! And watched the IBN video... wow so you are a famous personality!
ReplyDeleteSo when are you moving into Mangalore? That way the Goa trips become easier ;)
Hahaha, Danny! I am part Mangalorean now! Will be in your city next week onwards:)
DeleteWell written. Great to know that you had lent your voice against corruption. Unless the common man and woman become assertive and raise their voice, we can't script our own future.
ReplyDeleteSo true, Sabyasachi!!! So true!
DeleteWell Bhavna, you have proved it right that what we do is more important than what we know or where we are.
ReplyDeleteHmm..Fayaz, never thought of it in that way...but yes, you are right. What we do marks our lives more than where we are...
DeleteI entered the city as a slightly anxious but wide-eyed idealist and I leave the city as an existentialist.
ReplyDelete---
Is this what IAC did to us ?
I loved this post, you did not have a long stay in Chennai, but you did live it fully :)
Dang! You caught onto that sentence! I tried to keep it as subtle as possible...:) I lived it fully alright--but unconsciously and by grace. It was not by my choosing...although perhaps I was receptive and open to it...
DeleteHi Bhavana,
ReplyDeleteIndeed, that was a wonderful read. Your experiences of this wonderful city was interesting. You certainly had a good time over there. It was good to know about your other articles which were posted in the periodicals.
Hope you keep experiencing new aspects of life in other cities and that we get to see these places from the eyes of a talented individual. Keep it up :)
Regards
Jay

I already love Hyd a lot--the people are very warm and open. By and by I will find out more. So much love to you too and hugs from afar:)
DeleteAnd now the Hyderabadis better take cover - you're going to storm their city and shake them out of their "pursoon" attitude! Beware of their charm though! ;)
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, Bhavana, am so proud to be your friend - you really made a big splash in Chennai and I know that you'll make a difference wherever you are - because that's who you are. ♥
The one photo that made me to linger on, is the first one in this post. It seems you literally lived most of the phases of life your in Chennai. And that you have lot more to write about the days and incidences that happened here. Worthy material to write a book? I guess so! What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing and best wishes.
