Friday Thoughts: Being Now

The past week has seen us celebrate time—these moments and those moments and moments we aspire for. And some have emphasized on this moment, this Now. So this Friday I reflect on Now.

Till recently for me to be in the Now meant something like this visual: I was bobbing in the sea, cycling furiously to keep my head above water but staying in place, not moving, not thrashing—feeling the sun above, the water below, and the fear that I will start thrashing again with memories and dreams.

I realize Now that Nowness is not merely gathering senses to be in the present moment, gathering thoughts and awakening sensory organs to all that is around us and in us, to stay aware and present BUT more than that it is the deepening of perceptions, sensations, knowledge. It is feeling and knowing everything this moment that much more deeply.

Today my practice is more like this visual—of me letting go of that need “to stay afloat else I will drown” and sinking peacefully under the water, watching myself transform into a deep water fish at ease with her new surroundings, knowing that when I emerge I can once again be human.

What this has allowed me to do is that instead of being merely aware, it has allowed me to clue into the nuances of this moment, the myriad colours of every sensation. It has refined my perception and made me feel and understand more deeply than before.

Being Now has never been more fun.

  2. I am nowhere near that level yet... that much I do know. The mind is still restless , lost between personal vagaries, disappointments, watching patients and their parents woes... wondering what is the tipping point - where does my moment of peace come in all this.

    1. My mind is also restless but more and more I have learnt to sit with my restlessness and peace is in not running away...
But there are moments when I cannot even think of this practice, those are hard hard moments...

  3. visual meditation is a very effective tool, but I am still trying to perfect it. My moment of surrender is yet to come. Glad you did it, I has given me a new hope!

    1. Yes, Meenakshi...I find it sometimes the only way to grapple with things... and I surrender only at certain moments, but yes, it is becoming easier than before..:)

  4. Bhavana,

NOW as I feel is that one should be fully in the present with letting go of past except the lessons learnt from that time and not to be overly worried about future. One should be aware of all around and within also as you rightly said.

    Take care
