Friday Thought of the Week--New Mexico Forest Fire

For those of you who do not know, before moving to Chennai, I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This week my thoughts go to this enchanted land as the forests of Ruidoso, where I once vacationed, burns.

Father Fire, you appear in our lives in many forms:
As pain, you singe our hearts;
as anger you singe our spirits,
as thirst, you singe our being.
So be it.
But hear my prayerful request:
Do not singe the flesh of the forest anymore!

    1. I know, Maya! I feel sad for those who had to leave their homes and whose homes burnt...let the skies pour cool water on hearts and woods.

  3. the mystic law of the simultaneity of cause and effect is universal and absolute, and with our limited understanding, it is not always possible to figure out why things happen. i hope the fire is controlled soon, and that losses are prevented. thanks for the link, was not aware of this news.

  7. Bhavana....thank you for this prayer. It is so hard to think about, and so impossible not to. We smell the smoke. You've written a powerful poem to Father Fire, of the many forms. We do have no choice but to say, 'so be it', but oh, how we raise our pleas with you.. beautiful New Mexico Alexandra

  9. Forests are already getting destroyed in huge numbers by the one worst mistake of nature called Man. Atleast Nature should stop destroying those that have been left untouched.Reminds me of the Forest Fire scene from Bambi, Saw the movie a few weeks back with my son !

    1. Yes, they have been caused by carelessness and recklessness. But there are smart ways to contain spread by creating breaks in the fire circles.
No, I have not seen that movie. But do hope the fire calms down:)

    1. Yes, when folks have to leave their homes at short notice and then come back to find nothing..it is horendous. But worser for the forests--the trees, shade plants, the animals and birds, and the little insects and bugs...

  13. There are times when we can do no more than pray. Loved the simple honesty of your words. Father Fire has his reasons. Some day perhaps, we might be given an opportunity to grasp them.

    1. Yes, Srini, I am sure there are reasons--but at the moment I don't understand and I feel powerless and useless. A prayer is an action enough, right?

  14. The imagery is more overpowering than the words themselves. Father fire can be cruel indeed. May the forests be saved.

    1. Yes, Zephyr. May the forests escape any further wrath...after all we were responsible for our carelessness, then why hurt the forests?

  19. Sad. It was February last year I camped in Ruidoso and went on Ski- vacation. I just love that place. I hope it comes back to normalcy in a year.
